چکیده

In the picture-word interference task, two context effects can be distinguished: the semantic interference effect and the orthographic facilitation effect. A theory is described to explain these effects. This theory was implemented in a connectionist model. The model is able to simulate the time courses of the two context effects and their interaction.

Computational modeling of dynamic decision making using connectionist networks

In this research connectionist modeling of decision making has been presented. Important areas for decision making in the brain are thalamus, prefrontal cortex and Amygdala. Connectionist modeling with 3 parts representative for these 3 areas is made based the result of Iowa Gambling Task. In many researches Iowa Gambling Task is used to study emotional decision making. In these kind of decisio...

Asymmetric aging effects on semantic and phonological processes: naming in the picture-word interference task.

In 2 experiments, participants named pictures while ignoring auditory word distractors. For pictures with homophone names (e.g., ball), distractors semantically related to the nondepicted meaning (e.g., prom) facilitated naming by top-down phonological connections for young but not for older adults. Slowing from unrelated distractors and facilitation from phonologically related distractors were...

The semantic nature of response competition in the picture-word interference task

Picture-word interference refers to the fact that when a picture (Le.,line drawing) is presented with a word superimposed, picture naming latency is longer than when the picture is presented alone. In addition, naming latency will be further prolonged whenever the word and the picture are members of the same semantic category. This semantic interference effect was investigated in a series of st...

Lexical selection and verbal self-monitoring: Effects of lexicality, context, and time pressure in picture-word interference

Current views of lexical selection in language production differ in whether they assume lexical selection by competition or not. To account for recent data with the picture-word interference (PWI) task, both views need to be supplemented with assumptions about the control processes that block distractor naming. In this paper, we propose that such control is achieved by the verbal self-monitor. ...

Single-word predictions of upcoming language during comprehension: Evidence from the cumulative semantic interference task.

Comprehenders predict upcoming speech and text on the basis of linguistic input. How many predictions do comprehenders make for an upcoming word? If a listener strongly expects to hear the word "sock", is the word "shirt" partially expected as well, is it actively inhibited, or is it ignored? The present research addressed these questions by measuring the "downstream" effects of prediction on t...
